Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children #3) by Seanan McGuire

Synopsis

"When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest – not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.) If she can't find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests... A tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do. Warning: May contain nuts."

My Thoughts

This book was a great adventure! Most of the cast from Every Heart A Doorway is in this one, along with some wonderful, beautiful additions. I really loved Cora's addition to this world as an unapologetic fat girl and Rini's character made me snort with laughter on more than one occasion.

I really enjoyed that there was an adventure through multiple worlds in this one. And running around Confection was such a delightful read. I absolutely loved the logical non-sense of a world made of sugar. Interwoven with the adventure was Cora's story of being a mermaid and fat girl and what that would probably actually feel like if you'd suddenly found yourself in a soda pop sea on a world made entirely of sugar. I also loved that she basically invited herself on this adventure, despite not knowing the girl they were setting out to bring back from the dead.

“Sometimes that’s all you can do. Just keep getting through until you don’t have to do it anymore, however much time that takes, however difficult it is.” Seanan McGuire, Beneath the Sugar Sky

This one went by far too fast, as I had way too much fun reading it. Definitely an excellent and fun addition to this series!
